An Unprecedented Threat to the British Throne
Queen Victoria, England's beloved monarch who reigned for over 63 years, faced an unprecedented threat to her life. Over the course of her reign, she was the target of no less than eight assassination attempts, each with varying degrees of seriousness and intent. These attempts serve as a chilling reminder of the dangers that threatened the life of one of the most iconic figures in British history.
Assassination Attempt #1: Edward Oxford (June 10, 1840)
The Would-Be Assassin
Edward Oxford, a disgruntled footman, fired two pistols at Queen Victoria as her carriage passed by. The first shot missed, but the second shattered a window in the carriage. Oxford was quickly apprehended and charged with high treason.
Motive
Oxford claimed that he was motivated by political grievances and a desire to end the monarchy.
Assassination Attempt #2: John Francis (May 29, 1842)
The Would-Be Assassin
John Francis, a former soldier, raised his pistol and aimed it at Queen Victoria during her visit to Hyde Park. However, the pistol jammed, and Francis was overpowered before he could fire a second shot.
Motive
Francis's motive remains unknown, although it is speculated that he was mentally unstable.
Assassination Attempt #3: Daniel M'Naghten (January 20, 1843)
The Would-Be Assassin
Daniel M'Naghten, a Scot, fired at Queen Victoria as she was riding in her carriage in London. One of the shots missed, but the other struck the back of the carriage without causing any injuries.
Motive
M'Naghten claimed that he was influenced by religious delusions and believed that he was acting as God's agent.
Assassination Attempt #4: Francis Cuff (June 19, 1849)
The Would-Be Assassin
Francis Cuff, a stonemason, threw a wooden rod at Queen Victoria's carriage as it passed by. The rod did not hit the Queen, but it did startle her.
Motive
Cuff was a Chartist supporter who believed that the Queen was not ng enough to help the working class.
Assassination Attempt #5: William Hamilton (July 2, 1850)
The Would-Be Assassin
William Hamilton, an unemployed Irish laborer, fired a pistol at Queen Victoria while she was on horseback. The bullet missed and embedded itself in a tree trunk.
Motive
Hamilton was motivated by a desire for revenge against the British government.
Assassination Attempt #6: Arthur O'Connor (February 17, 1852)
The Would-Be Assassin
Arthur O'Connor, an Irish Fenian, fired a gun at Queen Victoria as she walked in Hyde Park. The bullet missed and hit a tree instead.
Motive
O'Connor was a member of the Fenian movement, which sought to overthrow British rule in Ireland.
Assassination Attempt #7: Roderich Lonegan (June 30, 1858)
The Would-Be Assassin
Roderich Lonegan, a Scottish laborer, fired a single-barreled pistol at Queen Victoria as she boarded a train. The bullet hit the Queen's cloak but did not cause any injuries.
Motive
Lonegan's motive remains unknown, although it is speculated that he was mentally unstable.
Assassination Attempt #8: Robert Pate (March 16, 1882)
The Would-Be Assassin
Robert Pate, a mentally disturbed sailor, attacked Queen Victoria with a penknife as she was walking in Windsor Park. He was quickly apprehended by police.
Motive
Pate believed that he had a divine mission to kill the Queen.
Resilience in the Face of Danger
Despite facing eight assassination attempts, Queen Victoria remained steadfast and unwavering. Her resilience and strength inspired the nation and earned her the admiration of her people. She continued to reign for another 20 years, becoming one of the most beloved and respected monarchs in British history.
A Legacy of Courage and Determination
The eight assassination attempts on Queen Victoria stand as a testament to the threats that faced the British monarchy during the Victorian era. They also serve as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Queen herself, whose stoicism and refusal to be intimidated remain an inspiration to this day.
